The Hanging Pod

Nugent Manufacturing major contributor to Chelsea Flower Show award-winning garden

Everyone at Nugent Manufacturing remembers fondly working with Diarmuid Gavin on the design and manufacture of his 2011 Chelsea Flower Show Gold medal-winning hanging pod garden.

Nugent Manufacturing removed part of the back wall of their facility in Naas so that they could move out the steel ellipsis, which formed the centrepiece of the garden, in one piece. They also designed and manufactured the dynamic Cor-Ten steel walkway and steel ponds that were an integral part of the People’s Choice winning garden.

“He was a pleasure to work with”, said MD Stephen Nugent. “He knew everyone’s name”. At the party at the flower show to celebrate the gold medal, he greeted Stephen and Helen Nugent like old friends. “He really championed his team of technical people who made the whole thing happen”, remembers Nugent. When Gavin was invited onto the Late Late Show, he agreed to appear on the condition that Stephen Nugent and other technical specialists who worked on the 100%-Irish project were on with him.

“When he said ‘Pink’ I thought he was joking”

Stephen recalls the day Gavin told him he wanted it to be painted pink. “He pulled out a swatch of the colour and the eyes popped out of my head. We painted it here on the shop floor”.

The garden, which was funded by Fáilte Ireland (75%) and Cork City Council (25%) is now in Fitzgerald Park in the Mardyke area of Cork city.
